Dog Daze of Summer

Finally summer is here and it is time for swimming, sunbathing, and of course, family vacation! Taking a pet on family vacation is becoming more and more common. Before you take your mutt on the road with you, make sure you read these important summer safety tips.

Taking your pet on a road trip can often be a stressful thing; worrying about them flying out the window, getting car sick, etc. Restraining your pet in the car is the best option to keep them safe. There are various pet harnesses that connect to the car’s seatbelts, keeping your pet in place. The Guardian Gear Dog Safety Harness works in most makes and models with a universal seat belt clip and an adjustable strap allowing the dog to sit, stand, and lie down comfortably. Another option is using a kennel. Kennels fully enclose your dog and make it easy to transport them. The Doskocil Classic Vari Kennel is endorsed by the Humane Society and provides a sturdy, comfortable, safe containment option for your pet.

If you have to fly with your pet, there are several regulations you need to be aware of. You should check with your airline to learn their specific policies regarding travel with pets. There is usually a fee associated with traveling with a pet and you will need to have all records of immunizations, licenses, etc. If fido is headed for the cargo area make sure you have a kennel that meets the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) or International Airline Transportation Association (IATA) regulations. The Doskocil Sky Kennel meets the requirements for both agencies. It is molded from heavy-duty, high-impact plastic with added rear ventilation holes to increase air circulation. Putting your dog in the cargo hold can be nerve-racking, for both you and your pet. Place a dish with frozen water in the kennel so water will be available as it thaws but won’t spill everywhere. Also, throw in a toy to keep them occupied and some food. Always check with your destination to find out any regulations or laws about incoming pets.

Keeping your pet hydrated while traveling is extremely important. Take a couple Travel Size Water and Food Bowls to have water and food readily available for your dog. These bowls are fully collapsible, waterproof, and machine washable. They are perfect for car travels, hotel rooms, and long walks.

Remember that heat and pets don’t mix. If you have to leave a pet in the car for any amount of time, leave windows cracked enough to let air circulate and cool the car. Car interiors can reach temperatures of over 120 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to kill your pet.
