Puppies Will Be Puppies

It is common knowledge that puppies chew on just about anything they can get their little teeth on; From furniture to shoes, from plants to towels. Though they shouldn’t be chewing on any of these things, there is one thing that they need to know is completely off-limits: you.

Many puppies play with each other by biting and sniping at one another and it is easy for them to think that you are to be played with the same way. It doesn’t mean your pet is aggressive, they are just young! There are several ways to prevent this habit from continuing. The first is to provide plenty of toys for the puppy to choose from. Some great ideas are the Puppy Kong and the Hercules Flexible Dental Chew. They both help to sooth the gums and keep puppies entertained.

Making sure your dog gets plenty of exercise will help keep them from chewing on things or biting you for attention. Daily walks or playing with toys in the yard will tire them out and also give them the attention they crave.

Puppies bite because it is fun for them. That is how they play and get your attention. It is important to know that your skin is not a toy and to punish them whenever they bite you. Spraying Bitter Apple on things they chew also prevents them from biting it again.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Your puppy will grow out of the chewing stage eventually. Until then, keep them entertained with chew toys and make sure they exercise often. When they do bite you or chew on something they shouldn’t, reprimand them right away. Remember, they are puppies!
